Let me rephrase an earlier question - Is the ability to Signt-SING a necessary skill for band and orchestra co

A person who cannot sight-sing (or the opposite process, taking dictation) is not musically literate. Period. If a conductor cannot hear the score, or at least the individual lines, how can he tell when somebody has played a wrong note, and what wrong note he actually played?
