Question about the game Wheel of Fortune?

I don't watch this game too often. But I've noticed that sometimes when contestants seem to already know the answer to the puzzle, they continue to buy vowels. Doesn't buying vowels cost money? And if they do know the answer, why spend your money buying vowels?
